Rooted in the City by the Lake

The Colony sits on the eastern shore of Lake Lewisville, with about 23 miles of shoreline. That's why it's known as the City by the Lake.

Helping research the history of The Colony and its residents is part of what the Friends do. Here are a few moments from that history.

  1. 1841

The Peters Colony settlement contract begins under the Republic of Texas. The city later takes its name from it.

  2. 1954

The Lake Lewisville dam, built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, begins collecting water.

  3. 1977

Residents vote to incorporate The Colony as a city.

  4. 1982

    The Colony Public Library opens.

  5. 2019

The library earns the Texas Municipal Library Directors' Association Achievement of Excellence in Libraries Award. It earns it again in 2020.

  6. 2027 Coming up

    The Colony turns 50.
